HOW TO PLAY ROULETTE
Roulette can trace its origins back to 17th century France, and is now one of the most popular games at any casino. It is very simple to play, requires no real skill, just a wise choice of where to place your bets.
One point worth noting - only play European or French Roulette. Most casinos offer 'American' Roulette, which offers no advantage to the player whatsoever, just a higher House Edge for the casino. You will recoginise an American Roulette Table by the two '0's. Don't play it.
To play Roulette, you place your bet or combination of bets, on the numbers in the table layout, or on the outside, where you will see Black and Red dots, '1st 12' , 'Even', 'Odd', '2 to 1' etc. Bets placed on numbers are called 'Inside' Bets, bets placed on other sections of the table are called 'Outside' Bets. The numbers on the table, and their colours (Red, Black and a Green '0'), correspond to the numbers and colours on the wheel at the side of the table.
The layout of the Roulette table gives the Player a huge range of betting options, which is one reason that Roulette is so popular. The Player can also combine any number of bets to improve their odds, or use one of many staking plans available to reduce the risk of a losing bet.
To make a bet, just click on one of the chips at the side of the table, and move that chip, with your mouse, to the area where you want to place your bet. At most online casinos, the sections of the table will become highlighted as you move over them, so you know exactly what bets you are making.
Once the bet is placed, click on the 'SPIN' text, and the Roulette wheel will begin to spin, with a small white ball inside it. The wheel and ball will come to a rest, and whichever number the ball has landed on, wins. In the image above, the ball has landed on No. 32, as highlighted by the picture at the top-right of the screen, and the marker over the number 32 on the table.
Betting Options and Payouts -
Here is where the skill is involved. The Player needs to decide what risk they are willing to take. Do you want to place a chip over a single number for a big payout, or do you want to cover most numbers on the table for a smaller, less risky payout?
Black/Red, Even/Odd, 1 to 18/ 19 to 36 Bets.
These bets pay out at 1 to 1. So if you bet $10 on Black, by placing a chip on the Black dot, and any number with a black background came up, you win $20, including the return of your stake. These are relatively low- risk bets, you have slightly less than a 50 - 50 chance of winning the bet. Why slightly less? Because of the '0' on the table, and wheel, this gives the house an edge of some 2.7%
Single Number Bets (Straight - Up Bet).
Here you want to get a high payout. In the example above, if the Player had put $10 on the number 32, they would have won $360, including the return of the bet. It's a great return, but highly risky. Note that the Player can also bet on the '0' coming up.
Dozens / Column Bets.
Place your chips on any of the '1st, 2nd or 3rd 12' sections for a Dozens bet, or at the bottom of any column of numbers marked '2 to 1'. If you had placed a $10 '3rd 12' bet, and the number 32 came up, you win $30.
Split Bet.
A bet on two numbers adjacent to each other, such as 8 and 11. Place the chips between these numbers for a 17 to 1 payout.
Street Bet.
Place your chips at the bottom of a row of 3 numbers, for example 22, 23, 24. This pays out at 11 to 1.
Corner Bet.
Place your chips at the cross between 4 numbers, for example 13, 14, 16, 17. This pays out at 8 to 1.
Six number Bet.
Similar to a Street Bet, but place the chips at the bottom of two rows, covering six numbers, for example, 7, 8, 9, and 10, 11, 12. This pays out at 5 to 1.
Combination Bets.
There is nothing to stop you placing any combinations of bets that you want, even ones that cover the entire table, and several such bets are detailed on this site. If you use these with a sensible staking plan, you can greatly improve your chances of coming away a winner, but the critical point to remember is to quit while you are ahead.
Here's a popular example -
Place two chips on 'Black' Place one chip on the column containing the numbers 1 to 34, (1st column), and one chip on the column 3 to 36, (3rd column). This gives you a total stake of 4 chips, but covers every number except 0, 5, 14, 23, and 32.
Combine it with the popular 1,3,2,6, staking plan. So if you lose the first bet, go up to 6 chips on black, and 3 on each of the columns. If you lose again, go back down to 4 chips on Black, and 2 chips on each column. If you again lose, (unlikely, but possible), put 12 chips on black, and 6 chips on each column. Hence the 1, 3, 2, 6, name. You can lose 5 times in row, and still come ahead with a winning streak.
En prison Rule.
Some casinos offer the En Prison bet. This applies to Even-Money bets only, and when the outcome is a '0', the Player can either take back half their stake, or leave the bet 'En prison', for another roulette spin. This cuts the house edge to below 1.5%.
Section Bets.
Some casinos, such as Cherry Red, have an oval section nest to the table which offers a number of betting combinations with one click, for example -
Voisins Du Zero - which covers 0/2/3, 4/7, 12/15, 18/21, 19/22, 25/26/28/29, and 32/35, all with one click.
Ophans - which covers 1, 6/9, 14/17, 17/20 and 31/34, with one click.
Tiers Du Cylindre - which covers 1, 5/8, 6/9, 10/11, 13/16, 14/17, 17/20, 23/24, 27/30, 31/34, and 33/36.

Many different versions of the game can be found at the casinos we recommend.

Roulette Systems - Here's a couple of ways to improve your winnings at Roulette. Remember, no system is guaranteed to beat the casino, it's for fun only, but it's better than putting all on a single number, or relying on the 'way the table is playing'.
One system that is frequently promoted, but is guaranteed to fail is betting on Red or Black, and doubling your stake each time you lose, Don't do it.
I tend to bet on the '1st 12' section of the table. I start off betting £1, and follow the staking plan below, always keeping to the '1st 12' section. Don't move your chips around, trying to chase the ball, it doesn't work like that.
1 / 1 / 2 / 3 / 4 / 6 / 9 / 13 / 20 / 30.
A second system, for high rollers only, is to bet on '1st 12' and '2nd 12' sections. Start with £1 on each, then follow the staking plan below if you lose. These figures are for each section, so your actual stake, by the 7th round is £300, the limit for most casinos.
1 / 3 / 7 / 15 / 32 / 70 / 150
