MAHJONG GAME REVIEW

Mahjong is a centuries old Chinese game, the aim of which is to get a winning hand of tiles, in much the same way as you get a winning Poker hand.

The online casino version is available at Betfair Casino, Casino.com, and William Hill Casino, all of which offer the game in the same format, from the Playtech software supplier.

Solo Mahjong is one of those games where it is easy to learn the basics, but quite tricky to master. You have to get a winning hand of 14 tiles, and you start the game with a ‘ready’ hand of 13 tiles, leaving you the job of selecting one more tile from a ‘wall’ of 24 face down tiles.

Mahjong tiles are grouped into suits, there are 3 Number suits, called Bars, Wons, and Dots, each suit has tiles numbered 1 to 9. There are 2 Letter suits, split into Red, Green and White ‘Dragons’, and North South East and West ‘Winds’.

To win a round of online Mahjong, you want to get a winning hand made up of one of the following – 3 sequential tiles of the same suit, and  2, 3, or 4 tiles of the same suit and value.

The 13 face up tiles in a row will be close to one of these winning hands, and you have 3 attempts to click on a face down tile to complete a hand.

The face up tiles will be presented in an ordered row, so you will be able to see what type of tile you need to make up a win, but with the wall of tiles being face down, this is really a game of pot luck, all you can do is click on random tiles, and the computer works out the rest for you.

Having said that, it is still quite a fun game, even though the finer details of what makes a winning hand are fairly complicated, especially when you win some hands at odds of 1 to 1, and some at 2 to 1.

In our experience, it’s best not to worry too much about the details, and just enjoy the game, but once you get into it, it's a fasinating game.
